On its 23rd year Mitsubishi Lancer International Junior Tennis Championship (MLIJTC) is set to bring more action and excitement in the hard court as the tournament opens on March 20. A total of 96 players from around the globe will again sweat it out at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center as they compete for the 23rd MLIJTC.
The MLIJTC is considered as one of the biggest juniors’ tournaments in Asia and the longest running tennis tournament in the Philippines. Lleyton Hewitt the youngest male tennis player to rank as number one and recognized as one of the 40 greatest tennis players since 1965 by Tennis Magazine, American Andy Roddick who was currently 6th ranked player in the world and top-ranked in the US, and Leander Paes of India were some of the tennis players that this tourney has witnessed and likewise produced. Among our very own players who once competed in the MLIJTC and gave pride to the country were Francesca La’o, Jennifer Saret, Maricris Fernandez who captured No. 1 ranking in Asia among players under 14 and the last Filipino to win a gold medal in the singles of the Southeast Asian Games, Francis Alcantara who was an Australian Open Grand Slam winner and Jeson Patrombon who was the country’s bet last year.
Once more the 23rd MLIJTC is expected to hit sports headlines with its roster of players. This year’s top seeded players are Nikola Milojevic of Serbia, Stefan Vinti of Romania, Indy De Vroome of Netherlands and Eliveta Kulichkova of Russia. 15 year old Jurence Mendoza and 17 year old Tamitha Nguyen will be the country’s pride for this year MLIJTC.
With the success of last year’s free tennis clinic, once again the MLIJTC will be offering it on March 25 at 9:00AM. National coaches will personally share their expertise and train participants. Interested future tennis players may register at the Rizal Memorial Stadium starting March 20, 2012. First 20 registrants will receive a Ralliart item.
This event is made possible through the collaboration of Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. with the International Tennis Federation, Philippine Tennis Association, and its major sponsor the renowned sports brand, Accel, in cooperation with Tecnifibre -23rd MLIJTC official tennis ball, Gatorade, Hidden Spring and Century Park Hotel.
